Film based on the true story of Irish Priest Hugh O’Flaherty. Hugh O’Flaherty spent much of his young life living in Killarney before entering the seminary in Mungret in Co. Limerick in 1918.
“The Scarlet and the Black” is based on Fr. O’Flaherty’s (Gregory Peck) time as a Vatican official in 1943-45 when he was hiding downed pilots, escaped prisoners of war, and Italian Resistance families. His diplomatic status in a Catholic country prevents Colonel Kappler (Christopher Plumber) from openly arresting him, but Fr. O’Flaherty’s activities become so large that the Nazis decide to assassinate him the next time he leaves the Vatican. Fr. O’Flaherty continues his work in a variety of disguises to evade the Nazis.
