Exhibition of Water Colours by George Gourley

August 1 @ 10:00 - August 18 @ 17:00

Exhibition of Water Colours by George Gourley

George’s rural upbringing near Cookstown, spanning five generations of farmers, deeply influences his art. Childhood days spent in the Bedford lorry with his father delivering goods across the eastern Sperrins, sparked his fascination with derelict farm buildings and traditional agriculture. His paintings, characterized by a unique use of muted colours, evoke the vanishing landscapes of Ireland, reflecting his dedication to preserving our cultural heritage.

What sets George’s work apart is his distinctive approach to colour. Employing a limited palette, he captures the essence of his subjects with a delicate interplay of muted tones, evoking the subtle nuances of light and shadow that define rural life. His paintings stand as poignant reminders of the vanishing landscapes and traditions of our island, each brushstroke a testament to the passage of time and the changing face of Ireland.

After dedicating 36 years to shaping young minds as the head of the art and design department at Cookstown High School, George embraced early retirement to pursue his passion for painting full-time. This newfound focus allowed him to delve deeper into his craft, honing his skills and refining his artistic voice.
