The film tells the story of "Dynamite" Johnny O' Brien, seafarer, rebel and hero of the 19th century Cuban War of Independence www.acaptainunafraid.com/home
'Dynamite' Johnny O’ Brien Johnny was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1837, though his parents hailed from Cavan and Longford, Ireland. The wiley mariner was involved in revolution and ruction from Haiti to Colombia, and Texas to Cuba. Captain O Brien’s story is a forgotten one, we bring it to light through interviews with the likes of Cuban historian, José Quintana, and longtime lower East side resident, Father Pat Maloney. The film begins on Misty East River of New York (where Johnny learned his trade) then moves swiftly to Ireland. County Cavan (with visions of some of the 365 lakes of that land-locked, lake-dappled countryside) is our next port of call. “Being of Irish parentage I was favourably disposed towards dynamite on general principles,” Johnny once exclaimed.
A Captain Unafraid won the Golden Fox award for best documentary at the Calcutta Cult Film Festival on the 6th of December.
