Drama / Comedy: "The Man in the Woman's Shoes" by Mikel Murfi

The Man In The Womans Shoes Poster

Friday 18th August 2017 - 8pm

Tickets:€15 / €12 - Tickets available -  Call 064 6648701 to purchase.

Set in October 1978 - Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has 'some business' to do in town.

The Man in the Woman's Shoes follows Pat Farnon as he walks to town and back again.  It is a beautifully observed piece, utterly simple and Murfi's "astonishing acting" has been widely praised.

The Man in the Woman's Shoes is funny, tender and at times downright daft.  You might just fall in love with life again

Don Stiffe in Concert

Don Stiffe is one of the greatest singer songwriters to have emerged on the Irish folk scene in recent years, receiving critical acclaim and awards both at home and abroad. He released his debut CD Start of a Dream in 2006, with his version of Richard Thompson’s “The Dimming of the Day" being awarded vocal cut of the year at the “Live Ireland 2010" awards. Irish Music magazine describes the music on his CD as being "in the Premier League”, with contributions from Frankie Gavin, Sharon Shannon, Arty McGlynn, etc. In 2011, he was a finalist in the Ireland’s Got Talent TV show, with huge national airwave ratings. His 2nd CD, Life’s Journey, followed, along with regular concert and TV appearances with The Kilfenora Ceili Band, and also Cherish The Ladies, with whom he still records and performs in the USA and Europe as guest singer. His own life story brings a very personal side to his music, and his latest single, “You’ll Always Be my Mother” has received great attention from the national media, with recent radio appearances on RTE’s Ray D’Arcy Show, and a major feature on Don’s adoption story in the Irish Times.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAemrS7JFTw

Film- A Doctor's Sword-(Doc) (2014)

Date: Thursday 30th November 8pm
Tickets: €7/€5

A Doctor's Sword- Director Bob Jackson- back due to popular demand.

A Doctor’s Sword  tells the remarkable story of Aidan MacCarthy, a doctor from Castletownbere West Cork, who, at 28, joined the RAF in London as the 2nd World war began. Soon after he found himself evacuated from Dunkirk and in May 1941 received the George’s Cross for rescuing the crew of a burning RAF plane which had crashed into a bomb dump on landing. He volunteered for service in Asia as Singapore fell to the Japanese, was captured in Java and survived almost 4 years of brutal captivity enduring starvation, malnutrition, forced labour, beatings and torture as a prisoner of war.

Aidan MacCarthy was a POW at the camp attached to the Mitsubishi Steel and Iron works in Nagasaki when the atomic bomb was dropped on the city at 11:02am on August 9th 1945. This was the beginning of the end of his captivity and he later returned home with a Samurai sword which was given to him as a gift by the POW camp commander at the end of the war.

The documentary tells Dr Aidan MacCarthy’s incredible story of resilience and bravery, and his daughter Nicola’s journey to find the family of the Japanese officer who gave their ancestral sword to her father.
