THE TRUMP SCHEMEAdapted by Sneem DramSoc from The Mundy Scheme by Brian Friel
Once upon a time, this country was in a state of economic paralysis. Strikes were an everyday occurrence. The country was rapidly going down the tubes. The future seemed bleak. Under intense pressure, our mother-fixated, ex-auctioneer Taoiseach developed a severe anxiety disorder and decamped from government buildings to the safety of his home under the care of his doting if demented mammy.
His minister for foreign affairs returns from New York with a plan to transform the entire west of Ireland into one large cemetery for the dead of London, Paris and New York, the brainchild of a young Manhattan property developer called Donald Trump.
In the ensuing scramble, the corrupt politicians try to double-cross one another, leaving Taoiseach Ryan on top of the greasy pole with the scheme a huge success.
The play is freely adapted from Brian Friel’s THE MUNDY SCHEME (1968), itself mildly prophetic of the Celtic Tiger years.
The play is in three acts:
Act 1: Taoiseach’s home
Act 2: The same three days later
Act 3, Scene 1: Taoiseach’s home three weeks later
Act 3, Scene 2: The same on the evening of the following day
Act 3, Scene 3: The same one week later
